Snakes and Snails and Puppy Dog Tails

Yes, it may be Cinco de Drinko for most of you, but today in Hawaii, they're celebrating Boys' Day. Traditionally, it's a Japanese holiday that honors the little boys in our lives, but it's been co-opted by the rest of the local Hawaiian culture. Every May 1st through 6th, families fly these big carp kites outside their homes, indicating they have a little man under the roof. Pappy sent a smaller version for us so Grammy could fit it in her suitcase. Thanks, Paps!

They might taste like mud, but the Japanese say carps are the boldest and noblest of fish, and are a symbol of strength and courage. Parents hope their sons grow up with the traits of the admirable carp.

So Happy Boys' Day to my Micah and to all the little boys in our family, especially Maddox, who embodies strength and courage more than any other little boy should have to at his young age.
